ജീവചരിത്രം

തൃക്കണ്ടിയൂരിൽ, കേളല്ലൂർ എന്ന നമ്പൂതിരി കുടുംബത്തിൽ‌ 1444 ഡിസംബറിലാണ്‌ സോമയാജി ജനിച്ചത്‌. ജാതവേദസ്സ്‌ എന്നായിരുന്നു അച്ഛന്റെ പേര്‌. ദൃഗ്ഗണിതമെന്ന ഗണിതപദ്ധതി ആവിഷ്‌ക്കരിച്ച വടശ്ശേരി പരമേശ്വരൻ നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ (1360-1455)ആലത്തൂരുള്ള വീട്ടിൽ നിന്നാണ്‌ സോമയാജി ഗണിതത്തിലും ജ്യോതിശ്ശാസ്‌ത്രത്തിലുംജ്യോതിഷത്തിലും പ്രാവിണ്യം നേടിയത്‌. പരമേശ്വരന്റെ മകനായ വടശ്ശേരി ദാമോദരൻ നമ്പൂതിരി (1410-1510) ആയിരുന്നു മുഖ്യഗുരു. മുഹൂർത്ത ദീപികയുടെവ്യാഖ്യാനമായ ആചാരദർശനം രചിച്ച രവി നമ്പൂതിരിയായിരുന്നു (1425-1500) മറ്റൊരു ഗുരു. സോമയാജിക്കും സഹോദരൻ ശങ്കരനും വേണ്ട പ്രോത്സാഹനം നൽകിയത്‌ആഴ്‌വാഞ്ചേരി തമ്പ്രാക്കളായിരുന്നു.

സംഭാവനകൾ `പൈ' (π) ഒരു അഭിന്നകസംഖ്യയാണെന്ന്‌(irrational number) ആധുനികഗണിതശാസ്‌ത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്‌ 1671-ൽ ലാംബെർട്ടാണ്‌. അതിന്‌ രണ്ടു നൂറ്റാണ്ട്‌ മുമ്പ്‌ ഇതേ ആശയം സോമയാജി തന്റെ ആര്യഭടീയഭാഷ്യത്തിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. വൃത്തത്തിന്റെ ചുറ്റളവ്‌അതിന്റെ വ്യാസത്തിന്റെ ഗുണിതമായി കൃത്യമായി കണക്കുകൂട്ടാൻ കഴിയില്ലെന്നാണ്‌ സോമയാജി വാദിച്ചത്‌. വ്യാസത്തെ π എന്ന അഭിന്നകം കൊണ്ട്‌ ഗുണിച്ചാലാണ്‌ ചുറ്റളവു കിട്ടുക

ആര്യഭടീയഭാഷ്യത്തിൽ തന്നെയാണ്‌ സോമയാജി ഇത്തരം ശ്രേണികളെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ എഴുതിയതും. വൃത്തഭാഗമായ ചാപത്തെഞാണുകളുടെ തുകയായി കാണുന്ന രീതി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ്‌ അദ്ദേഹം ഈ രീതി ആവിഷ്‌ക്കരിച്ചത്‌. പാശ്ചാത്യഗണിതശാസ്‌ത്രജ്ഞർ ഇത്തരം പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങൾ ആവിഷ്‌ക്കരിക്കുന്നതിനും രണ്ടുനൂറ്റാണ്ട്‌ മുമ്പാണ്‌, കേരളത്തിലിരുന്ന്‌ സോമയാജി ഇവ താളിയോലകളിൽ കോറിയിട്ടത്‌

ജ്യോതിശാസ്‌ത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളാണ്‌ സോമയാജിയുടേതായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നവയിൽ മിക്കവയും. തന്ത്രസംഗ്രഹം, ഗ്രഹണനിർണയം,ഗോളസാരം, സിദ്ധാന്തദർപ്പണം, സുന്ദരരാജ പ്രശ്‌നോത്തരം, ഗ്രഹപരീക്ഷാകർമംഎന്നിവയുംആര്യഭടീയഭാഷ്യവുമാണ്‌ സോമയാജിയുടെ മുഖ്യകൃതികൾ. ഇവയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനകൃതിയായി ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്‌ ആര്യഭടീയഭാഷ്യമാണ്‌. നൂറുവർഷം ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന സോമായജി 1545-ൽ അന്തരിച്ചു.

" Yagyopaveeta" - The real meaning..

Yagnopavitam is a Sanskrit word…Yagna means the homa or sacred ritual and upaveetham means a covering(we are getting different meaning like vastra etc). Yagnopaveetham means a sacred covering on the body without which a Yagna or a sacred ritual cannot be performed.Yagopavita should were from the day when a person start gayatri manta that day we says upanayana samskara. A brahmachari should were yagopavita that has three strands; grihasta could wear two such yagnopavita.

Wearing of the Yajñopavītam is in three forms:

One is Upavītam, where the Yajñopavītam is worn over the left shoulder and under the right arm. Upavītam is also called savya.

The Second is Nivītam, where the Yajñopavītam is worn around the neck and over the chest. Nivīta form is to be used during Rishi Tharpana, sexual intercourse etc.

The third, Prachīnavītam is where the Yajñopavītam is worn above the right shoulder and under the left arm. This is for Spirits and is used by men when performing the death ceremonies of an elder.

Yagnopaveetham Navathanthu Nirmitham(यज्ञोपवीतं नवतन्तुनिर्मितम्).

Yagnopaveetham is made up of nine layers of woven cotton thread. The length of the thread used for making Yagnopaveetham should be 96 breadths of four fingers measured by ones own hand. Gayathri Manthra has 24 letters and when it is added together from four Vedas it becomes 96 (24x4) that gives the power to recite gayatri mantra. Four fingers represent the four states of the soul a man experiences from time to time (waking, dreaming, dreamless sleep, and absolute knwoledge).

It is said that nine layers represent nine devathas who are the presiding deities of Yagnopaveetham. ओंकारोग्निश्च नागश्च सोम पितृप्रजापति, वायु सूर्यो विश्वेदेवाः इत्येतास्तन्तुदेवताः. They are Pranavam (Omkara), Agni, Naga, Moon (Soma), Pithru Devathas, Prajapathi, Vayu, Sun (Surya), and all other Devathas. These nine threads indicate the nine gates of human body. it is prescribed that the Yagnopaveetham should have knots. The knot with which the three strands are tied together is called Brahma Granthi and it represents the pranavaswarupa.

The three strands represent Ida, pingala and sushumna nadi, which the kundalini energy manifests as prana and consciousness. Its symbolozes the three trinal lords brahma vishnu and maheswara, same its three worlds bhu bhuvar and suvar, Three faminine energies lakshmi sarasvati and durga, and three tatvas satva, rajas and tamas.

It also gives the symbolism that every human being there are three kinds of debts Viz, Mathru-Pitru-Rina, Rishi-Rina and Deva-Rina. Mother and father are supposed to be the first teachers of Man / woman. They are the creators of our physical body. One should be grateful to them because of their selfless service towards their children. The Second debt is Rishi-Rina i.e. gratitude towards one’s teachers or Gurus who give meaning and a second life to the students by giving them true knowledge and leads him on to the right path. The insensate deities are earth, water, fire, air and ether. Man should try not to pollute these deities as because of them we receive food, shelter and clothing. Yagnopaveeth’s three threads also teach a man that he ought to be very cautious about his thoughts and means Goddess Gayatri (Goddess of mind), Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of word) and Goddess Savitri (Goddess of deed).

A dvija means twice born. In first stage all are born out of the mother womb and there is no difference at all. Second stage is the upadesha of gayatri, means upanayana, then we will cal him dvija or twice born. The third stage is vipra, when one has masterd the study of the vedas. The fourth stage is brahmana when one actually realizes the Brahman through the knowledge of the self. One becomes a brahmana not by birth, but only when one realizes the knowledge, one becomes brahmana by action not by birth.

By wearing yagnopaveetam one gets purified both exernally and internally through his mind. It’s not a thing we can understand through physically, it is completely internal.

Yagnopaveetam is not a mere symbol to identify a community. One who wears a yagnopaveeta may not necessorily be a Brahmana and one who does not wear a Yagnopaveetham may not be a non-Brahmin either. Yagnopaveetham has the sanctity of its own and one has to qualify himself for wearing it, not by birth alone but also by practice. Yagnopaveetham is not something that is worn for the world to know. It is for the realization of Brahman or knowledge within.

So there is no need of quarrel because one is using a Yagyopaveeta, its not showing any community. It’s only a symbolic representation of pure knowledge. May b present time know body understand the meaning of yagyopaveeta. Hari Omh...

Bhaskaracharya-II (1114 – 1193 CE)

.Undoubtedly, the greatest name in the history of ancient and medieval Indian astronomy and mathematics is that of Bhaskaracharya-II. His mathematical work Lilavati is the most popular book of traditional Indian mathematics. Some historians opine that Bhaskaracharya was from Karnataka while some view that he hails from Nashik district of Maharashtra.

Bhaskaracharya’s works

Bhaskara II composed a number of works (all in Sanskrit), three of which are very famous:

* Lilavati (on arithmetic, geometry, mensuration, etc.) which is the most popular work on ancient Indian mathematics.

* Bijaganita (on algebra including indeterminate analysis) which is a standard Hindu work on algebra.

* Siddhanta Siromani which is a standard work on Hindu astronomy, and is supplied with author’s own commentary calledVaasana Bhaashya.

Usually it is customary to regard Lilavati, Bijaganita, Grahaganitaand Goladhyaya as the four parts of the Siddhanta Siromani to make it a comprehensive treatise of Bhaskaracharya’s Hindu mathematical sciences. It is noteworthy that he had composed this great work in 1150 AD, i.e. when he was just 36 years old!

Two among his other works are the Karnakutuhala (whose epoch is 1183 AD) and a commentary on Lallacharya’sShisyadhivriddhida tantra (768 AD).

Lilavati (The Beautiful)

It belongs to the class of works called Patiganita, i.e. elementary mathematics covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry and mensuration. Its popularity is shown by the fact that it is still used as a text book in the Sanskrit-medium institutions throughout India. It provides the basic mathematics necessary for the study of almost all practical problems, including astronomy. The subject matter is presented through rules and examples in the form of about 270 verses which can be easily remembered. 

The great popularity of Lilavati is illustrated by the large number of commentaries written on it since it was composed. Many commentaries were written in Sanskrit by mathematicians of different periods, commentaries were written in regional languages and a few modern scholars like H.T.Colebrooke (London, 1817 CE), have given the English translation on original sanskrit text and commentaries.

Bijaganita

It served as a text book for Sanskrit medium courses in higher mathematics. In it, the author included an exposition based on the earlier works. Among the sources named were the algebraic works of Sridhara and Padmanabha. There is a separate chapter on the Indian cyclic method called Cakravala. He attributes the methods to earlier teachers but does not specify any name. Due to the difficult nature of some of the topics,Bijaganita was not as popular as the Lilavati.

Siddhanta Siromani

It has two sections – Grahaganita (Planetary Mathematics) and the Goladhyaya (Spherics). Often these two sections appear as independent works. There is a lucid commentary on the whole work by the author himself. It is called Mitakshara orVasanabhasya. Why I am a HINDU.

A Hindu was flying from JFK New York Airport to SFO San Francisco Airport CA to attend a meeting at Monterey, CA.

An American girl was sitting on the right side, near window seat. It indeed was a long journey - it would take nearly seven hours.

He was surprised to see the young girl reading a Bible unusual of young Americans. After some time she smiled and we had few acquaintances talk.He told her that I am from India

Then suddenly the girl asked: 'What's your faith?' 'What?' He didn't understand the question.

'I mean, what's your religion? Are you a Christian? Or a Muslim?'

'No!' He replied, 'He am neither Christian nor Muslim'.

Apparently she appeared shocked to listen to that. 'Then who are you?' “I am a Hindu”, He said.

She looked at him as if she was seeing a caged animal. She could not understand what He was talking about.

A common man in Europe or US knows about Christianity and Islam, as they are the leading religions of the world today.

But a Hindu, what?

He explained to her - I am born to a Hindu father and Hindu mother. Therefore, I am a Hindu by birth.

'Who is your prophet?' she asked.

'We don't have a prophet,' He replied.

'What's your Holy Book?'

'We don't have a single Holy Book, but we have hundreds and thousands of philosophical and sacred scriptures,'

He replied.

'Oh, come on at least tell me who is your God?'

'What do you mean by that?'

'Like we have Jesus and Muslims have Allah - don't you have a God?'

He thought for a moment. Muslims and Christians believe one God (Male God) who created the world and takes an interest in the humans who inhabit it. Her mind is conditioned with that kind of belief.

According to her (or anybody who doesn't know about Hinduism), a religion needs to have one Prophet, one Holy book and one God. The mind is so conditioned and rigidly narrowed down to such a notion that anything else is not acceptable. He understood her perception and concept about faith. You can't compare Hinduism with any of the present leading religions where you have to believe in one concept of God.

He tried to explain to her: 'You can believe in one God and he can be a Hindu. You may believe in multiple deities and still you can be a Hindu. What's more - you may not believe in God at all, still you can be a Hindu. An Atheist can also be a Hindu.'

This sounded very crazy to her. She couldn't imagine a religion so unorganized, still surviving for thousands of years, even after onslaught from foreign forces.

'I don't understand but it seems very interesting. Are you religious?'

What can He tell to this American girl?

He said: 'I do not go to Temple regularly. I do not make any regular rituals. I have learned some of the rituals in my younger days. I still enjoy doing it sometimes'.

'Enjoy? Are you not afraid of God?'

'God is a friend. No- I am not afraid of God. Nobody has made any compulsions on me to perform these rituals regularly.'

She thought for a while and then asked: 'Have you ever thought of converting to any other religion?'

'Why should I? Even if I challenge some of the rituals and faith in Hinduism, nobody can convert me from Hinduism. Because, being a Hindu allows me to think independently and objectively, without conditioning. I remain as a Hindu never by force, but choice.' He told her that Hinduism is not a religion, but a set of beliefs and practices. It is not a religion like Christianity or Islam because it is not founded by any one person or does not have an organized controlling body like the Church or the Order, I added. There is no institution or authority..

'So, you don't believe in God?' she wanted everything in black and white.

'I didn't say that. I do not discard the divine reality. Our scripture, or Sruthis or Smrithis - Vedas and Upanishads or the Gita - say God might be there or he might not be there. But we pray to that supreme abstract authority (Para Brahma) that is the creator of this universe.'

'Why can't you believe in one personal God?'

'We have a concept - abstract - not a personal god. The concept or notion of a personal God, hiding behind the clouds of secrecy, telling us irrational stories through few men whom he sends as messengers, demanding us to worship him or punish us, does not make sense. I don't think that God is as silly as an autocratic emperor who wants others to respect him or fear him.' He told her that such notions are just fancies of less educated human imagination and fallacies, adding that generally ethnic religious practitioners in Hinduism believe in personal Gods. The entry level Hinduism has over-whelming superstitions too. The philosophical side of Hinduism negates all superstitions.

'Good that you agree God might exist. You told that you pray. What is your prayer then?'

'Loka Samastha Sukino Bhavantu. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti,'

'Funny,' she laughed, 'What does it mean?'

'May all the beings in all the worlds be happy. Let there be Peace, Peace,and Peace every where.'

'Hmm ..very interesting. I want to learn more about this religion. It is so democratic, broad-minded and free' she exclaimed.

'The fact is Hinduism is a religion of the individual, for the individual and by the individual with its roots in the Vedas and the Bhagavad-Gita. It is all about an individual approaching a personal God in an individual way according to his temperament and inner evolution - it is as simple as that.'

'How does anybody convert to Hinduism?'

'Nobody can convert you to Hinduism, because it is not a religion, but it is a Culture, a way of leaving life, a set of beliefs and practices. Everything is acceptable in Hinduism because there is no single Authority or Organization either to accept you or to reject you or to oppose you on behalf of Hinduism.'

He told her - if you look for meaning in life, don't look for it in religions; don't go from one cult to another or from one Guru to the next.

For a real seeker, He told her, the Bible itself gives guidelines when it says ' Kingdom of God is within you.' I reminded her of Christ's teaching about the love that we have for each other. That is where you can find the meaning of life.

Loving each and every creation of the God is absolute and real. 'Isavasyam idam sarvam' Isam (the God) is present (inhabits) here everywhere - nothing exists separate from the God, because God is present everywhere. Respect every living being and non-living things as God. That's what Hinduism teaches you.

Hinduism is referred to as Sanathana Dharma, the eternal faith. It is based on the practice of Dharma, the code of life. The most important aspect of Hinduism is being truthful to oneself. Hinduism has no monopoly on ideas. It is open to all. Hindus believe in one God (not a personal one) expressed in different forms. For them, God is timeless and formless entity.

Ancestors of today's Hindus believe in eternal truths and cosmic laws and these truths are opened to anyone who seeks them. But there is a section of Hindus who are either superstitious or turned fanatic to make this an organized religion like others. The British coin the word 'Hindu' and considered it as a religion.

He said: 'Religions have become an MLM (multi-level- marketing) industry that has been trying to expand the market share by conversion. The biggest business in today's world is Spirituality. Hinduism is no exception'

He said "I am a Hindu primarily because it professes Non-violence - 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharma' means - Non violence is the highest duty. I am a Hindu because it doesn't condition my mind with any faith system.

A man/woman who changes his/her birth religion to another religion is a fake and does not value his/her morals, culture and values in life.

Hinduism is the original rather a natural yet a logical and satisfying spiritual, personal and a scientific way of leaving a life..

കുറച്ച് നാളുകളായി ഒരു വിഷയത്തിൽ പഠനത്തിനായി ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്.. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ഇന്നത്തെ കുട്ടികളുടെ സ്വഭാവരീതിയിലുള്ള മാറ്റത്തിന്റെ കാരണം..സൈക്കോളജിക്കലായി അന്വേഷിച്ചപ്പോഴും പലരും പല കാഴ്ചപ്പാടു ആണ് പറഞ്ഞത്...അതിന് വേണ്ടി തന്നെ പലപ്പോഴായി പല വ്യക്തികളുമായും, സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുമായും സംഭാഷണം നടത്തി.. ഇതിന്റെ ശരിക്കുള്ള കാരണം അറിയണം എന്നുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് ഒരുപാടു സ്ഥലത്തെ പ്രത്യേകം ചില രാജകുടുംബങ്ങളെ എടുത്ത് പഠനവിധേയമാക്കി.. പല സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും അവിടെത്തെ വൈദ്യന്മാരു പ്രത്യേകം അവര്ക്ക് പൊസിഷന്സും നിത്യവ്രതങ്ങളും നൽകിയിരുന്നു എന്ന് അന്വേഷിച്ചപ്പോൾ മനസ്സിലായി.. നമ്മുടെ പരമ്പരയിലും പയോവ്രതം പോലെ അനുഷ്ഠാനമുണ്ടെന്നും ഷോഡശസംസ്കാരത്തിലുള്ള ഗര്ഭാധാനവും അതേ പോലെ കാമശാസ്ത്രം പോലെ പ്രസിദ്ധങ്ങളായ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളും പുറകിലുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നിയപ്പോൾ ആ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലൂടെ ഒരു പഠനം ആകാമെന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചു.. .

1. Give Your Hair a Beautiful Shine

You probably know that spritzing lemon juice on your hair, then going outside in the sunshine will give you natural-looking highlights. But, did you know that rinsing your hair with lemon juice will make it shiny too? You probably never thought of this! The acidic juice will take out the built-up residue from shampoo and hair care products. To give your hair a healthy shine, mix up a quarter cup of lemon juice in a cup of water.

2. Remove Tarnish From Copper and Brass

Mix up a quarter cup of table salt and just enough lemon juice to make a paste. Then, apply a coating of this onto any tarnished copper or brass pots, pans and other items you may have. Leave the lemon juice/salt paste set for five to ten minutes. Next, wash the item in warm tap water and then rinse it well. Use a soft, clean cloth to buff it dry. If any tarnish remains, repeat the process again.

3. Use Lemon Juice to Get You Going

Anytime someone in your household gets constipated, you may reach for a store-bought laxative. But did you know that lemon juice is a natural laxative that has no side effects? You probably never thought of this! Just pour two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice into an eight-ounce glass of warm water. Drink it in the morning when you first get up. The citrus juice will help regulate your digestive system.

In one of his earlier books, fitness guru Richard Simmons recommended doing this as a way to lose weight!

4. Clean Up Household Grease Naturally

Mix up a tough solution of lemon juice and tap water, and your stove, countertops and appliances will be shining like new. It's fantastic! Pour a quarter of a cup of lemon juice in a spray bottle, then fill it up with tap water. Shake it a few times to mix the solution, then use it to remove stubborn grease.

5. Disinfect Your Kitchen Cutting Board

You diced up some onion, and then some poultry for tonight's dinner on your cutting board. Once you were done, you washed it in hot, sudsy water, but is your cutting board really clean? If you spray it lightly with pure lemon juice, then rinse it well. Allow the cutting board to dry thoroughly before you put it away, the bacteria- as well as the onion odors- should be gone.

A friend of mine was making decorative wreaths by using fresh pine boughs. The work was fun, but she complained about the pine tar mess that was left on her hands. I suggested that she scrub her hands with a mixture of lemon juice and table salt. Voila! The pine tar came right off!

7. Silence a Hacking Cough and Heal a Sore Throat

This fantastic use for lemon juice will quiet a hacking cough and soothe a raw throat. Simply mix up two teaspoons of lemon juice and a half teaspoon of honey together. Swallow the tasty mixture and you should feel better soon. Repeat the process, if need be, in thirty minutes.
